A Slack Case Study
Shopify, the e-commerce platform powering more than 500,000 stores and billions in annual sales, needed a way to scale operations and keep distributed teams connected while reducing risk from narrow operational knowledge. Critical processes—like incident response, server management and customer support routing—were concentrated in just a few people, creating costly delays during outages and inconsistent workflows across remote offices.
Shopify built a suite of Slack-integrated bots to operationalize workflows and democratize expertise. Their Spy bot exposes 100+ commands (support status, shop metrics, server controls, incident timelines, GitHub ops), expanding incident-response capability from three people to about 50 and backing the tool across data centres for resiliency. Complementary apps (Rate My Plate, Simple Poll, Unicorn) streamline office coordination, feedback and recognition. The result: faster, more consistent responses, reduced outage time and cost, and stronger connection and efficiency across a growing, distributed workforce.
