Rostelecom Demonstrates On-Demand Transport Services With the First Multivendor Transport SDN PoC in Russia

Rostelecom, one of Russia’s largest telecommunications operators, completed the country’s first multivendor transport SDN proof of concept to address surging bandwidth demand from cloud and IoT services. The company needed faster service creation, deployment and restoration, full end‑to‑end visibility and automation across multiple optical vendor domains while avoiding vendor lock‑in.

The PoC used Huawei, NEC and Nokia optical equipment with an NEC/Netcracker umbrella multidomain SDN controller to provide hierarchical, end‑to‑end control. The solution enabled automatically provisioned, on‑demand transport services that are dynamically optimized, cut service ordering and activation from months to hours, reduced errors and simplified configuration — demonstrating lower costs, improved automation and true multivendor interoperability.
