VMware Saves 75% Screening Time By Optimizing Technical Recruiting With HackerRank

VMware, a Palo Alto–based leader in virtualization, needed to scale technical hiring for thousands of applicants while minimizing the heavy lift of phone screens. Its event-driven team handled ~20 events and ~10,000 applicants a year, but narrowing candidates required 20 senior engineers and created a time-consuming screening bottleneck.

VMware implemented HackerRank CodeChallenges and CodePair to automate early-stage assessments, auto-score and stack-rank applicants, and run real-time coding interviews. The change doubled the number of candidates assessed, cut phone-screen time by 75% (saving ~2,250 hours per 10–15 hires), improved candidate experience, and set the team on track to save an estimated ~18,000 hours company-wide.
