Swisscom - Customer Case Study

Swisscom’s “Schulen ans Internet” program provides free, high‑bandwidth Internet to 7,000 Swiss schools—serving 100,000 teachers and around 1 million students—but faced the challenge of centrally managing web access and security across diverse age groups and large data volumes while meeting data‑residency and cost‑reduction requirements. Cantons needed granular, school‑type specific filtering and reliable protection against malware, advanced threats and zero‑day vulnerabilities without installing hardware or software at each site.

Swisscom implemented Zscaler’s Direct‑to‑Cloud Network with a Swiss‑based, multimandantenfähige cloud to enforce centralized policies, URL filtering, antivirus and dynamic content inspection. The rollout (from 2013) delivered scalable Advanced Threat Protection, per‑canton policy control, on‑demand reporting and significantly reduced administrative overhead and costs—securely connecting all schools and simplifying security management for cantonal IT teams.
