How Avalara built a design system to unify their products

Avalara, a multi-product company that has made several acquisitions over the years, needed a way to unify its growing ecosystem and give product teams a clear source of truth for design standards, guidelines, and accessibility requirements. Its design system team built “Skylab” and used Zeroheight alongside Figma and their own SDK to document and manage the system without relying on engineering resources for frequent documentation updates.

With Zeroheight, Avalara centralized design system research, specs, usage guidelines, and publishing workflows in one place, helping the team work more efficiently across more than twenty products. The result was a scalable, well-documented process that improved collaboration, supported adoption across teams, and helped unify Avalara’s product experience; the case study highlights no specific numeric ROI, but it emphasizes reduced engineering overhead and stronger long-term adoption thanks to Zeroheight.
