How automation helped this journalist quench a news desert
Bloomfield Information Project, led by journalist Simon Galperin in Bloomfield, N.J., set out to fill a local “news desert” by collecting and sharing reliable community news. The challenge was manually gathering information from RSS feeds, websites, online search, CrowdTangle, and press releases, then turning it into a newsletter and social posts, which was too time-consuming to do by hand.
With Zapier, Bloomfield Information Project automated much of the workflow using tools like Mailparser.io, Google Sheets, Digest by Zapier, WordPress, Gmail, Mailchimp, Instagram, and Twitter. The result was a faster publishing process that helped the project share nearly 2,000 news items and build a newsletter audience of 400 subscribers, freeing Simon to focus on higher-value community work.
