Visually integrated fire protection for historic Christchurch priory

Technical Alarms Limited, partnering with Xtralis/VESDA, was commissioned to replace an older detection system at Christchurch Priory, a 900‑plus‑year‑old landmark. Protecting the Priory required a discreet, high‑sensitivity solution able to cope with tall volumes, complex airflow, architectural obstructions and benign smoke sources like candles, incense and theatrical effects.

TAS installed 17 VESDA VLC aspirating detectors and an OSID beam, routing sampling pipes through inconspicuous locations and programming alarm thresholds to avoid nuisance alerts. The upgrade provided reliable early warning and wide coverage across the Nave, Quire, Lady Chapel, Triforium, Organ Loft and roof areas, preserved the building’s aesthetics and simplified ongoing maintenance for caretakers.
