A Xtralis Case Study
Wuhan Telecom, a major telecommunications operator in Hubei Province, had installed 112 VESDA aspirating smoke detectors across 39 meter, exchange, data and switch rooms but struggled to monitor and maintain them from disparate sites. Responding to alerts, adjusting detector settings for local conditions, and testing units was effectively a full-time task, and the company wanted to use continuous smoke-level data to enable staged responses and reduce maintenance overhead.
Working with Chu’s Fire Engineering, Wuhan Telecom deployed Xtralis VSM4 as a centralized monitoring and control platform, connecting remote sites via ADSL, Serial‑to‑Ethernet devices and VESDAnet interfaces to a central monitoring station. VSM4’s two‑way control let operators adjust thresholds, diagnose and clear faults, reset filters and run tests remotely, which improved alarm response, enabled planned, proactive maintenance, reduced repeat site visits and lowered maintenance costs while increasing operational security.
