US Navy Installs VESDA ASD to Protect it’s High-tech Stealthy Destroyer

The U.S. Navy’s Zumwalt-class destroyer is a cutting-edge, multi-mission warship with a reduced crew, integrated networks and automated damage-control systems—so protecting it from fire with fast, reliable detection and low false alarms was critical. The challenge was to integrate VESDA aspiration smoke and Meggitt IR5 flame detectors into the ship’s LonWorks-based network and automated firefighting system to ensure rapid, interoperable response across the vessel’s complex systems.

Meggitt supplied VESDA VLP smoke detectors and IR5 flame sensors, and FieldServer Technologies developed the VESDA and Modbus RTU to LonWorks protocol interfaces needed for seamless integration. The result was a dependable, low–false-alarm fire-detection solution fully tied into the ship’s automated suppression system, improving survivability and reducing crew workload for damage control.
