A Xtralis Case Study
Loy Yang Power Station, Victoria’s largest energy producer, is a 2,000 MW brown coal–fired facility in the Latrobe Valley where fire presents a major operational risk across coal bunkers, conveyor systems, electrical switchgear, battery rooms, control simulators and large storage bays. The site needed a reliable, very-early-warning detection system to prevent spontaneous combustion, protect critical electrical and backup systems, and avoid costly business interruption or catastrophic loss.
The plant deployed VESDA aspirating smoke detection—initial Xenon systems (1989) and now about 114 VESDA VLP detectors managed by a VSM4 network with monitoring at the fire station, control room and gatehouse. The solution delivers ultra-early detection (including overheating cables before charring), stable performance in dusty or high-velocity environments, low false alarms and minimal maintenance, resulting in improved safety, continuous operation and reduced risk and ownership costs.
