A Xtralis Case Study
Swindon Borough Council, a local authority serving over 181,000 residents with around 8,000 employees, faced rising vandalism, drug-related crime and public safety concerns while its five cabled CCTV systems proved inadequate. Conventional wired networks were expensive to run (about £2,000 per leased link) offered low bandwidth and were difficult to re-site, so the council needed a more flexible, cost-effective surveillance solution.
The council deployed ADPRO FastTrace multi-site IP recorders and moved sites onto a Wi-LAN VIP wireless network, giving higher-quality images (9 Mb vs 2 Mb), faster setup and modular, secure connectivity without per-link line rental. The wireless system reduced maintenance and telecom costs, enabled 24/7 remote monitoring with evidential-quality footage, significantly cut crime in monitored areas and paid for itself within two years.
