A Xtralis Case Study
Essex County Council commissioned five new waste transfer stations as part of a county-wide municipal waste strategy, including the Harlow facility that handles about 55,000 tonnes of waste a year. Stored waste in these large, dusty bunkers presents a high fire risk from self‑combustion, methane, chemical reactions and hot machinery, and the harsh, corrosive, high‑temperature environment makes reliable, very‑early smoke detection difficult and prone to nuisance alarms.
DPL Electrical Services proposed and installed Xtralis Industrial VESDA VLI (a VLI‑880 with three sample pipes and remote test points), selected for its actively monitored sampling, fully monitored HEPA filtration, consistent sensitivity and ease of maintenance. The system delivered very‑early, reliable detection in extreme dusty and corrosive conditions, avoided false alarms from point‑type detectors and provided robust protection and easier maintenance for the transfer station.
