Xtralis’s ADPRO FastScan transmission and Axiom video motion detection systems were deployed across 17 tram stations in Utrecht to tackle rising vandalism and safety concerns on the city’s integrated tram and bus network. Connexxion, the public transport operator, and project consultants IMSYS required a stable, easily integrated platform capable of delivering high-quality images and alerts across LAN/WAN, ISDN, PSTN, GSM or satellite links to reassure staff and passengers and reduce crime.

The solution uses Axiom’s intelligent motion detection for exception-based reporting and FastScan to send high-resolution freeze-frame alarms to Connexxion’s control room, where operators assess incidents and dispatch guards or police as needed. Four static cameras per station, pan/tilt housings and fiber cabling — with trams also being fitted with cameras — have exposed and deterred vandals, improved passenger and driver confidence (including the elderly and disabled), and enabled additional uses such as demographic surveys and enhanced health-and-safety monitoring.
