Clemson University replaces 160 spot detectors with 4 Xtralis VESDA-E VEA units

Clemson University faced a challenge when building a new state-of-the-art football complex next to its indoor practice field. Prescriptive fire codes required a 60-foot separation or a costly firewall, which was not ideal. The university also needed to limit maintenance traffic in the facility for security and confidentiality reasons. They turned to Xtralis and its VESDA-E VEA smoke detection solution to address these issues.

Xtralis implemented a performance-based design using its VESDA-E VEA system. This solution replaced 160 traditional spot detectors with just 4 VEA detectors, which are centrally maintained in mechanical rooms. This greatly reduced the need for maintenance personnel to access secure areas, protecting team confidentiality. For Clemson University, the Xtralis system provided superior early warning smoke detection, creating a safer environment for evacuation while also achieving significant cost savings on the project.
