A Xtralis Case Study
Calgary International Airport required a new runway and tunnel infrastructure to increase capacity, which included building the longest runway in Canada. The challenge was to implement a special fire safety system for the vehicular tunnels that could detect smoke and noxious gases without causing false alarms or flight delays. Xtralis provided the solution with their Industrial VESDA VLI smoke detectors and VESDA ECO gas detection units.
The solution from Xtralis met NFPA Code 502 requirements and provided superior detection with minimal maintenance. Upon detecting smoke or gas, the system automatically activates powerful jet fans to evacuate the hazard. This successful project, which ensured safety without disrupting operations, contributed to the airport's expansion receiving the Canadian Consulting Engineering Award of Excellence.
