How Slack Raised the Bar on the Modern IPO Process

Slack turned its high-profile direct listing into a more modern, efficient process by addressing the outdated, error-prone workflow of traditional financial printers and email-based reviews. Preparing the S-1 required fast, accurate collaboration among bankers, lawyers, auditors, and internal teams, but back-and-forth edits and version confusion were slowing the team down.

Slack combined its own messaging channels with the Workiva connected reporting platform to build the S-1 from a single source of truth, enabling real-time feedback, linked numbers and narrative, embedded comment threads, and an automatic audit trail. The approach eliminated version-control issues and duplicative work, accelerated reviews, saved hours (and costs), increased confidence in filing accuracy, and was rolled forward to streamline Slack’s subsequent 10-Qs and 10-Ks.
