How the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles Cut Food Waste by 43% to Improve Sustainability and Fight Inflation

Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles (CHLA), a nationally recognized pediatric hospital, was challenged by rising inflation, staffing constraints, and the need to improve sustainability by reducing food waste. Since 2021, CHLA has worked with Winnow and its AI-powered food waste management platform to better understand what was being thrown away and find ways to cut costs without disrupting operations.

Winnow helped CHLA quickly implement waste tracking and use the data to adjust purchasing and redesign menus. As a result, CHLA reduced food waste by 43% over nine months, avoided an estimated 18.5 metric tons of CO2, and generated more than $17,000 in estimated cost savings, equivalent to about 11,000 meals.
