Driving consistent policies and procedures across the health system

BJC HealthCare, a large nonprofit health system with 15 hospitals and $4.3 billion in net revenue, faced the challenge of creating a virtual centralized billing office and standardizing policies and procedures across 10 separate business offices and multiple legacy patient-account systems. In 2010 BJC partnered with Waystar and deployed Waystar Agency Manager (along with the Presumptive Charity Module) to centralize billing and better manage its network of nine collection agencies.

Waystar’s solution created a virtual centralized billing office, delivered apples‑to‑apples agency reporting, and screened accounts for presumptive charity before bad‑debt placement. As a result, Waystar helped BJC HealthCare achieve a total annual collection improvement of $17.8M, $17.2M in improved vendor performance, $600K in commissions saved, and $190M in increased charity care.
