PriceCharting A/B Tested A More Relevant CTA To Increase Conversions

Pricecharting, a small US-based site that provides current and historic video-game price guides, wanted to increase clickthroughs on its “download price guide” CTA after founder JJ Hendricks suspected ad-blindness and unclear wording hurt engagement. To test improvements, Pricecharting used VWO’s A/B testing platform (Visual Website Optimizer).

Using VWO, Pricecharting changed the CTA text from “Download” to “Price Guide” and removed the price; the variant boosted CTA clickthroughs by 620.9% with 99.9% statistical significance and was implemented sitewide. A follow-up VWO pricing test adding “Starts at $X” showed the $4 version performed best (91% significance) but with a lower conversion rate than the CTA winner (0.70% vs. 1.03%), giving Pricecharting clear, actionable insights for future pricing experiments.
