Huntsville Utilities, the City of Huntsville–owned utility serving over a quarter of a million people, faced an aging reel‑to‑reel recorder in its central dispatch that had become difficult and costly to maintain. To modernize phone and radio recording, Huntsville selected VPI’s advanced digital radio and phone line recorder technology.
VPI installed a digital system with DVD‑RAM archival storage and fast search/playback, enabling 24/7 recording of multiple phone and radio channels, instant retrieval for billing disputes, incident reconstruction and staff training. The upgrade eliminated constant tape changes (the old system used hundreds of 48‑hour reels), improved dependability, and reduced ongoing maintenance expense (the utility redirected about $4,000/year previously spent on the old system’s maintenance), delivering measurable operational and cost benefits from VPI’s solution.
