A VPI Case Study
F-M Ambulance Services, the largest ground ambulance provider in North Dakota serving the Fargo‑Moorhead area, faced an obsolete 20‑channel reel‑to‑reel recorder with only 30‑day retention, slow and laborious call retrieval, and the need to integrate with its existing Nitsuko PBX and VHF Motorola radio. Seeking flexibility, easier maintenance, faster search and replay, and digital storage, the agency evaluated vendors and selected VPI’s state‑of‑the‑art digital call and radio recording solution.
VPI implemented a SQL database‑driven, software‑based recorder using COTS hardware, RAID short‑term storage and DVD‑RAM archiving, plus client/server search by date/time/channel/agent and live monitoring capabilities. The VPI system enabled F‑M Ambulance Services to maintain equipment themselves, expand retention to tens of thousands of hours, and cut call retrieval time from roughly an hour to seconds — delivering what the agency describes as a 100% quality improvement and measurable gains in risk management, training, and customer service.
