StoryCorps Transcends Social Distancing and Keeps Personal Storytelling Alive With Vonage Video API

StoryCorps is a U.S. nonprofit that records, preserves, and shares personal stories for the Library of Congress and national broadcast. When COVID-19 closed its in-person recording booths, the organization urgently needed a digital, self-service way to capture conversations and preserve an oral time capsule of the pandemic.

StoryCorps partnered with Vonage to build StoryCorps Connect, a WebRTC-based recording platform using the Vonage Video API that was prototyped quickly and integrated with existing production workflows. The tool supported both public self-recording and an internal facilitator workflow for broadcast‑quality audio, enabling more than 10,000 people across all 50 U.S. states and 15 countries to record stories and powering campaigns like the AARP/Ad Council initiative and the Great Thanksgiving Listen.
