Right-Sizing Budgets with Analytics

The City of Greeley, Colorado needed a better way to communicate water conservation and set fair, effective household water budgets after recurring drought conditions made demand management politically and logistically difficult. In 2013 Greeley partnered with Vertexone and used WaterSmart’s Home Water Reports and Utility Analytics Dashboard to improve customer outreach and analyze household consumption and occupancy assumptions.

Vertexone’s analytics and customer-facing reports revealed that overly generous occupancy assumptions were masking true usage and misdirecting savings recommendations, so Greeley adjusted occupancy estimates, tightened budgets, and emphasized summer outdoor irrigation messaging. The change increased rebate responsiveness and budget compliance among report recipients and produced a verified 4.1% improvement in water-use efficiency within six months.
