A Verint Systems Case Study
The City of Niterói, Brazil — a growing coastal municipality of roughly 487,000 residents — faced rising crime and an understaffed police force that strained public safety and interagency coordination, especially with the upcoming Rio 2016 Olympics. Homicides and other violent incidents had increased sharply, prompting city officials to seek a technology-driven solution to improve situational awareness, speed responses and restore public confidence.
Working with Verint and local partner Informatica El Corte Inglés, Niterói built a Centro Integrado de Segurança Pública using Verint’s Situational Awareness Platform, Enterprise VMS and Video Analytics: initially 200 citywide cameras (planned to grow to 600), 20 license-plate cameras, 80 alert buttons, geo-referencing and integrated dispatch to accelerate response. The deployment delivered faster investigations and more reliable interagency communication, stronger surveillance coverage and measurable crime reductions — robberies down 53.85%, burglaries down 57.14% and an overall crime rate decrease of 37.65% — along with lower dispatch times and fewer false alarms.
