A Verint Systems Case Study
Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG), the state-owned operator serving over 2.4 million people daily across Berlin’s U-Bahn, tram, bus and ferry networks, was grappling with vandalism, petty crime and the resulting loss of passenger confidence. In 2001 BVG launched a formal pilot to identify a cost‑efficient, publicly acceptable mobile CCTV solution that would deter incidents, protect staff and support police investigations.
BVG chose LAT and Verint technology—multi‑camera systems, onboard recorders and driver monitors, pre‑cabled racks for faster installation and a driver privacy pause switch—managed by a dedicated B-SUS evaluation unit. The program scaled from a 2002 pilot to 825 CCTV‑equipped buses (of ~1,300) at about €8,000 per vehicle; ongoing upgrades moved systems toward digital recording. A survey found more than 85% of drivers and passengers now feel safer on CCTV‑equipped buses.
