Scaling Fantasian’s handcrafted dioramas for Apple Arcade

Fantasian, developed by Mistwalker, set out to bring a 60-hour, console-style JRPG to Apple Arcade on iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and tvOS while staying within Apple’s 4 GB mobile size limit. The team’s challenge was to combine over 150 handcrafted dioramas and highly detailed visuals with mobile-friendly performance, using Unity as the development platform.

Unity helped Mistwalker build an automated pipeline for photogrammetry, asset import, compression, and prefab creation, while also providing tools like the Unity Memory Profiler, Frame Debugger, and Asset Store to optimize performance and speed production. The result was a 500 GB art and model workflow reduced into a 4 GB game, with shader debugging time cut by up to 66% and months saved in 3D modeling and animation.
