Illuminating Harold Halibut's underwater world

Harold Halibut, developed by SLOW BROS., needed a faster, more reliable way to iterate on lighting and scene changes without constantly rebaking lightmaps or manually placing light probes. Working with Unity, the team used Unity’s Adaptive Probe Volumes (APV) to improve preview quality and make lighting look more accurate during development, while also easing the workflow for moving and adding objects in scenes.

Unity also helped Harold Halibut reach console players with its Spatial Temporal Post-Processing (STP) upscaling technology, which the team backported into their launch build. The result was a consistent visual experience across PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5, with STP delivering impressive image quality even at very low internal resolutions and outperforming other upscaling options in the team’s view.
