How Highstreet Market scaled a VR MMO with ECS for Unity

Highstreet Market used Unity to scale Highstreet: Calamity, a city-scale slice of its next-generation VR MMORPG. The team needed to overcome major compute and rendering bottlenecks as player counts and network entities grew, while also meeting the strict performance limits of standalone VR hardware.

Unity helped Highstreet Market transition to ECS for Unity and Netcode for Entities, alongside Unity’s multiplayer services such as Multiplay Hosting, Matchmaker, Lobby, and Friends. The team also adopted a hybrid ECS/MonoBehaviour approach, optimized physics and animation workflows, and aggressively reduced rendering complexity. As a result, Highstreet hit 72 fps in optimized areas, cut SRP draw calls from 80 to five, and reduced a single mesh from two million triangles to 500,000.
