Vattenfall Europe, one of Europe’s largest power and heat generators, faced a heterogeneous, end-of-life telephony estate across 72 German sites and needed a future-proof, failsafe communications platform. The challenge included a step‑wise migration to VoIP for administrative offices, highly reliable hybrid systems for power stations and substations, integration of cordless handsets at 60 locations, a trading solution for the grid control center, and standardized procurement and support.

Unify solutions were deployed: redundant OpenScape UC servers for the administrative network, gateways between sites and the public network, about 80 HiPath 4000 hybrid systems (supporting ~5,000 digital and 12,000 analog devices), HiPath cordless at 60 sites, HiPath Trading in the control center, and a 3‑year framework agreement. The result is simpler VoIP administration, a failsafe communications backbone for production, greater operational flexibility, faster remote maintenance and prioritized SLAs (sub‑2‑hour response), plus cost savings and a scalable platform for future convergence.
