Birmingham Children’s Hospital Deployed Unify’s Openscape Xpert To Streamline Clinical Decision Processes.

Birmingham Children’s Hospital is a specialist city-centre paediatric centre serving Birmingham and the West Midlands with over 240,000 patient visits a year and the UK’s largest single paediatric intensive care unit. Its Kids Intensive Care and Decision Support (KIDS) service runs a 24-hour operations centre providing urgent advice and transport coordination for critically ill babies, children and young people; as the service grew and moved to a new hub, it needed a more efficient, reliable communications system to speed clinical decision making and manage around 1,600 acute referrals annually.

The hospital deployed Unify’s OpenScape Xpert—the first European healthcare installation of the platform—to centralise triage and conference calling via a 24/7 Freephone line. The system brings the right clinicians together quickly, supports more participants per conference, lets operators create and reconfigure calls while holding individuals, and enables faster dispatch of transport teams. In service since February 2014, Xpert has improved call handling, allowed multiple cases to be managed simultaneously, and streamlined referral, decision and transport coordination across the region.
