UK Government launches petitions platform in 10 weeks with Unboxed

Unboxed partnered with the UK Government to redesign and rebuild the UK Parliament's petitions platform. The challenge was to create a modern, easy-to-use service for public democratic engagement that could handle extreme scale, processing up to 500,000 daily emails and over a million signatures for a single petition, while meeting strict government digital standards.

The solution involved Unboxed using agile product delivery and Ruby on Rails to develop an open-source platform focused on user experience, accessibility, and performance. The new service launched in just 10 weeks. The results were significant, with the platform processing over 41 million signatures to date, enabling over 300 petitions to be debated in Parliament, and demonstrating a capacity to handle up to 300,000 signatures per hour. Unboxed's work also led to similar platforms being built for Jersey, Wales, and Scotland.
