Covestro Leverages AI & RPA to Streamline Repetitive HR Processes

Covestro, a global premium polymers supplier headquartered in Germany, needed a faster way to handle a highly repetitive HR process: processing employee sick leave certificates for SAP submission. The work involved reading scanned PDFs and images, manually extracting data, and entering it into SAP, often taking up to 7 minutes per request and consuming significant HR time. UiPath helped Covestro address this challenge with its automation platform, including Document Understanding, AI Center, and Action Center.

Using UiPath, Covestro built an AI-enabled RPA workflow that classifies sick leave documents, extracts key data with OCR and machine learning, and sends low-confidence cases to human validation before the robot updates SAP and generates reports. The results included 50% straight-through processing, about 95% accuracy, and an 85% reduction in time spent on manual sick leave submissions. Covestro also reported processing about 500 documents per week, with HR specialists needing only 1–2 minutes to review exceptions and validation cases.
