AI Cases Applied to LG Chem’s OCR

LG Chem, a global chemicals company, needed a better way to handle handwritten calibration reports and other document images from multiple trading partners and contractors. Its existing OCR approach struggled with recognizing 146 different templates, often taking days to learn each format and requiring extensive human review. UiPath Document Understanding was used to help automate this process.

UiPath implemented Document Understanding with AI and deep learning to classify and extract data from documents more efficiently, starting with the most common formats and training on sample documents for each template. The result was more than 70% faster processing, reducing the workload from about 14 months to around 4 months for the calibration reports. LG Chem has since expanded the solution to invoice processing, with about 75% of invoices recognized automatically and major time savings across more than 350 automated tasks overall.
