A Tungsten Automation Case Study
Spectrum Health, a large not-for-profit health system in West Michigan, needed to eliminate paper-based medical records so clinicians could access a complete, legal patient record. With more than 60,000 inpatient discharges a year, the HIM imaging team handled roughly 12.5 million inpatient documents (2,400 unique clinical types) plus another 8 million back-office documents—volumes that exceeded the barcode-centric capture capabilities of their Cerner EMR.
ImageSoft implemented Kofax Capture, Kofax Transformation and Kofax Monitor with a waterfall classification (barcode → form number → form title → OCR) and learning-server capabilities to automate capture, classification and indexing. The solution met 100% of project goals, enabled a fully integrated paperless workflow with image-by-image QA and 72-hour release, avoided adding about 50 full-time staff, and is now a mission-critical platform across Spectrum’s hospitals.
