A Tungsten Automation Case Study
A leading integrated business services provider was engaged by a large UK retail bank that, after divesting from its parent, inherited responsibility for processing more than 40,000 cheques a day. Manual handling would have required roughly 60 full‑time staff, so the bank needed a fast, accurate and cost‑effective way to digitize and pre‑validate cheques while capturing the data needed to support operations and customer service.
The provider built a modular overnight cheque‑scanning platform using Kofax technologies (Capture, Transformation, Communication Server and Import Connector), applying MICR/OCR/ICR to extract and compare amounts, account details and signatures, and routing unclear items to offshore validators. All data is delivered by 05:00, SLAs have been consistently met (processing typically finishes by 03:00), the solution handled more than double the expected volume in year one (over 5 million cheques) and delivers typical client cost savings of about 40%, while being reused and adapted for other customers.
