Truven Health Helps Missouri Agency Save $1.5 Million Annually

The Missouri Consolidated Health Care Plan (MCHCP), a state agency providing medical insurance to about 108,000 government employees and retirees, needed better information to decide whether to expand purchase of medical stop-loss insurance. Historically it covered only about 25% of members and—facing bids to increase coverage to roughly 85%—lacked detailed historic catastrophic claims data to assess need or evaluate offers.

Using Truven Health’s Advantage Suite® database, which consolidated three years of high-cost claims from all five MCHCP health plans, the agency quantified its catastrophic-claim experience and learned utilization patterns. MCHCP concluded stop-loss coverage was not justified, a decision expected to save about $1.5 million annually and enabled more informed negotiations with its health plans.
