Quality Measures Reveal Opportunity to Improve Time to PCI and Reduce Mortality Rates

IASIS Healthcare, a national operator of medium-sized acute care hospitals, identified in 2010 that its cardiac service line was not meeting timeliness goals for Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) — the procedure should be done within 90 minutes of hospital arrival — and aimed to reach the top 10 percent nationally. Delays moving patients from EMS to the ED and then to the cath lab exposed process variability and higher mortality rates that required a systemwide quality review.

IASIS launched the IASIS Innovative Performance Improvement Program built on its HMMQP (Lean and Six-Sigma principles) and used Truven Health Analytics’ CareDiscovery and Quality Measures plus 100 Top Hospitals benchmarking to target process barriers, engage frontline clinicians, and monitor progress. The initiative cut arrival-to-PCI times (Southwest General: 99 → 74 minutes; systemwide: 79 → 72 minutes) and reduced PTCA mortality at Southwest General from 5.41% to 1.75%, earning IASIS a 2011 Advantage Award for clinical performance.
