A Truven Health Analytics Case Study
Newton-Wellesley Hospital, a 270-bed medical center in Newton, MA, faced rising operating costs and declining reimbursement and needed a data-driven way to balance patient-centered care, service excellence, and cost efficiency. Leadership sought to ensure Lean cost reductions wouldn’t harm internal service operations or patient satisfaction and required a unified strategy to resolve conflicting recommendations from separate performance tools.
The hospital implemented a “balanced approach” by integrating Truven Health’s ActionOI with two internal performance and patient-satisfaction tools into a combined dashboard that established directional links between operations, service quality, and financial results. Using ActionOI to target savings and analyze downstream effects, Newton-Wellesley saved more than $5 million from FY08–FY12, increased inpatient satisfaction by 15% and internal service quality by 3.4%, expects another $500K+ in savings the following year, and earned a Truven Health Advantage Award.
