MGM Resorts Applies Patient-Centered Medical Home Principles to Develop Innovative Health Plan

MGM Resorts, a global hospitality company with over 60,000 employees, faced rising healthcare costs and worsening population health in Nevada. Seeking lasting improvements for employees and the community, MGM aimed to transform care delivery by implementing a primary care–led, patient-centered medical home model.

MGM launched the Direct Care Health Plan—18 partnered primary care physicians operating under standardized protocols—and used Truven Health’s Advantage Suite for physician profiling, plan modeling and reporting. The plan doubled enrollment to nearly 10,000 in 2013, delivered 88% patient satisfaction (64% waited <15 minutes), boosted cancer screening rates (mammography 60%→77%, colon 32%→47%, cervical 62%→79%), achieved high diabetes screening (HbA1c 95%, LDL 97%), and reduced utilization (1% fewer ER visits, 12% fewer specialist visits, 26% fewer medical admits, 49% fewer medical admit days). MGM has shared its model locally and received a 2013 Healthcare Advantage Award.
