A Trimble MEP Case Study
F.E. Moran, a long‑standing mechanical contractor in Northern Illinois, faced a growing disconnect between its 3D/BIM office models and field installation accuracy on large projects. To bridge the gap between QuickPen CAD models and on‑site layout, the firm selected Trimble MEP and its Trimble MEP Layout Solution (using Trimble Nomad handhelds and a Trimble MEP Robotic/Total Station) to transfer parametric model data like hanger and sleeve positions directly to the field.
Using the Trimble MEP Layout Solution, F.E. Moran exported control and field points from QuickPen PipeDesigner 3D to the Trimble Nomad and used the Trimble robotic total station to place points on site. Trimble MEP’s workflow let one technician set roughly 500 points in a single day (vs. several days by tape), increased concrete deck insert productivity by a factor of 10, and enabled accurate, first‑time installation of prefabricated piping through complex tunnels — delivering measurable time savings, fewer errors, and stronger BIM‑to‑field coordination.
