A Traefik Labs Case Study
William & Mary, a public research university, needed to modernize a heterogeneous infrastructure — moving from legacy VMs to containers and Kubernetes — while supporting bursty academic workloads and commercial systems like an ERP that couldn’t be rewritten. The IT team evaluated several load-balancer options and selected Traefik Labs’ Traefik as a cloud‑native, protocol‑aware reverse proxy that could provide persistent sessions, service discovery, and integrate with both Docker Swarm and Kubernetes.
Traefik Labs’ Traefik was deployed across on‑prem Docker Swarm and cloud Kubernetes clusters, delivering service discovery, session persistence, Prometheus metrics, header handling, and a visual dashboard out of the box. As a result, William & Mary now runs roughly 100 services on‑prem and 30 in the cloud (150+ services and 400+ containers total), has simplified configuration across orchestrators, migrated to Traefik v2.2, and reduced operational complexity and costs compared with legacy load‑balancer approaches.
