Rocket.Chat Deploys Traefik to Manage Unified Communications at Scale

Rocket.Chat, a collaboration platform serving over 12 million users, needed to transform its on‑premises offering into Rocket.Chat Cloud, a 24/7 SaaS service that could scale globally and absorb traffic spikes. Early proof‑of‑concept infrastructure proved too brittle—adding or removing services required manual routing resets—so Rocket.Chat turned to Traefik Labs, adopting Traefik Proxy as a Kubernetes Ingress controller to address their routing and load‑balancing needs.

By moving to a Kubernetes‑centric architecture and deploying Traefik Proxy at the edge, Traefik Labs enabled automatic service discovery, dynamic routing, and built‑in load balancing across Rocket.Chat’s four Kubernetes clusters (10–15 nodes each) with 2–4 Traefik load‑balancer nodes per cluster. The result simplified operations, delivered the scale and reliability Rocket.Chat required, and now handles requests numbering in the billions per month; Rocket.Chat recommends Traefik Labs’ solution and plans to keep it as their long‑term edge and routing platform.
