Case Study: SUNY New Paltz achieves 97% container return rates with Topanga ReusePass

A Topanga Case Study

Preview of the SUNY New Paltz Case Study

SUNY New Paltz and dining partner Sodexo made the switch from their analog-token reusables program to ReusePass, Topanga’s track-and-trace solution for culinary programs

The State University of New York at New Paltz (SUNY New Paltz) and its dining partner Sodexo faced challenges with an existing analog reusable container program, which suffered from low return rates and poor student adoption. They needed a long-term, scalable solution to reduce single-use waste without negatively impacting the diner experience.

Topanga implemented its ReusePass solution, which featured RFID technology for automated processing and a direct integration with GrubHub for mobile ordering. This streamlined the process for students and operators. As a result, SUNY New Paltz achieved a 97% average return rate, saved over $47,000 on packaging costs, and diverted more than 130,000 single-use containers from landfills. Topanga's solution significantly increased student participation and operational efficiency.
