Case Study: McMaster University achieves 99% reusable container return rates with Topanga ReusePass

A Topanga Case Study

Preview of the McMaster University Case Study

How Topanga's ReusePass helped one of Canada's leading universities go zero-waste and their unique approach to single-use surcharges

McMaster University, a public research university in Ontario, Canada, struggled with a failing reusable container program. Their analog system led to a consistent loss of containers, low program awareness among its 26,000 students, and operational confusion. They partnered with vendor Topanga to implement a technology-driven solution using their ReusePass system to overcome these challenges.

Topanga’s ReusePass solution provided unique tracking codes for containers and automated SMS reminders to drive accountability. The program was seamlessly integrated into existing university operations and utilized McMaster’s own containers. The results were highly successful, achieving a 99% average return rate and an average cost of less than $0.07 per use, which is 70% less than compostable alternatives. The university also saw a very efficient 3-day container cycle rate and is now planning to expand the program to new locations.
