University of Massachusetts Lowell protects faculty and staff data with CrashPlan

The University of Massachusetts Lowell, an educational institution, needed a reliable way to protect faculty and staff data from lost or stolen laptops, hard‑drive failures, and to preserve endpoint data during migrations, legal holds, and as part of its disaster recovery/business continuity plan.

UMass Lowell deployed CrashPlan (Code42) as a public‑cloud endpoint backup with onsite storage of encryption keys, replacing manual USB/external‑drive backups. The solution enabled full recovery of a stolen laptop’s data, reduced IT hours spent managing and restoring backups, supported migrations and legal holds, and helped the university meet FERPA requirements.
