The University of Wisconsin–La Crosse faced a sudden challenge when COVID‑19 made in‑person transfer student orientation impossible. With a small staff and a transfer population that tends to be older, working, or juggling family and military commitments, a live remote event didn’t fit their schedules or needs, so UWL needed a convenient, customizable, mobile‑friendly way to deliver orientation and track engagement.
UWL repurposed the TargetX Student Portal to create an invite‑only, personalized orientation space with conditional content, video resources, and a drag‑and‑drop build that was quick for staff to assemble. Portal logins let UWL track participation and run follow‑up text campaigns for non‑attenders; the result was a low‑lift, visually appealing experience that administrators praised and that 76% of student users rated as valuable.
