Understanding your Safety DNA Reduces Recordable Injuries

A large U.S. chemical processing facility partnered with Select International to address stagnant OSHA recordable rates and the limits of traditional safety programs. Faced with essentially unchanged serious injury rates and the need to move toward a Zero Harm workplace, the company tested a new, person-focused approach that assesses individual psychological safety traits—“SafetyDNA”—to identify why some people are more likely to be exposed to risk.

The facility administered the SafetyDNA assessment to 898 employees and delivered experiential workshops plus brief one-on-one coaching; incidents were tracked three months before and after coaching. The result: total significant safety incidents fell from 14 to 5 (a 64% reduction, statistically significant), with decreases across all incident types, an estimated $414,000 in direct savings, and a 50% drop in motor vehicle accidents.
