A top children’s hospital with a newly renovated campus and strong clinical reputation set out to “operationalize” a patient- and family-centered culture but found staff surveys, patient satisfaction scores, high turnover and long time-to-fill metrics were misaligned with that vision. Leadership made culture change a five-year strategic priority and focused HR on aligning hiring, onboarding and performance management with the organization’s patient-safety and experience goals.
Partnering with Select International, the hospital developed an organization-wide behavioral competency model in 12 weeks and implemented Select Interviewing® for Healthcare plus healthcare-specific assessments (ServiceFit®, NurseFit® and Select Assessment® for leaders) to bring objectivity to hiring and development. The effort yielded Magnet status, a 16-point increase in patient satisfaction percentile rank, top-10 national ratings, markedly improved staff attitudes, a 59% reduction in overall turnover, 53% reduction in one-year turnover and a 44% reduction in time to fill.
