Select International partnered with a large retail organization to develop a customized professional-level assessment aimed at improving hires’ culture fit and reducing costly early turnover. The retailer was experiencing high early separation rates (19% at 60 days, 28% at 120 days, and 30% at one year) and wanted a way to screen for candidates who would better align with its organizational culture.

Using in-depth job analyses, Select implemented a culture-fit assessment early in the hiring process (begun in 2012). After roughly two years the retailer’s early turnover fell from 19% to 13% at 60 days, 28% to 17% at 120 days, and 30% to 18% at one year (a 12% net reduction), which translated—under conservative cost assumptions—into estimated savings of nearly $9 million annually.
