Reducing Injuries by Effective Screening the Results are Impressive

Select International worked with a large auto manufacturing facility of about 4,000 hourly production employees that faced high rates of acute strains and repetitive strain injuries from repetitive lifting, squatting, twisting and turning. These injuries carried large direct and indirect workers’ compensation costs, and the client needed a better way to screen hires to reduce injury risk and associated expenses.

Select implemented a multi-stage pre-employment process focused on job-relevant factors and safety orientation, including a 6-hour production simulation that replicated core physical tasks. Over a one-year tracking period, injury rates among those hired with the new system fell from 12.6% to 3.4% (about a 4x reduction), producing an estimated annual savings of roughly $13.8 million.
